Abstract

Currently, majority of the schools in Malaysia are still using manual systems for managing their computer laboratories. As expected, the manual systems pose some weaknesses. Some of the shortcomings are inefficiency in the booking system, the unauthorized use of the computer facilities and ineffectiveness of usage monitoring. Therefore, this School Computer Laboratory Management System that employs finger printing biometric technology is proposed to solve these problems. With this system, students need to scan their thumb print before booking for a computer. Their thumb print identity is used to validate their status as registered or unregistered users and whether fees have been paid. With this, the booking and registration processes are much faster and easier. For usage monitoring, this system is able to monitor the students’ usage and control their computer from the counter. This system adds some extra features for the purpose of usage manager like generating usage report and controlling printing facilities. Evolutionary Prototyping Methodology has been used as it considers continues improvement needs of the users until their needs have been fulfilled. The system was developed using Visual Basic 6 as it is suitable for integration with Microsoft Windows environments and the needs of client-server system.
