Abstract

This project studies the techniques and alternatives available to port the monolithic Linux kernel on top of the more portable, flexible and extensible Mach microkernel model. The main idea to exploit is to implement Linux as an application program running as a user process on top of Mach, as was successfully implemented with the 4.3BSD UNIX system. This report explains the findings of the process management and inter process communication aspects of Mach and the system call mechanism of Linux. The main concepts, structure, organization and mechanisms related to Mach and Linux are also explained. This project was implemented based on the OSF mklinux as the Linux server on top of the OSF MK micro kernel, an OSF modified version of the Mach 3.0 micro kernel. Experiences and issues encountered in the course of implementation specifically those related to the interface between the Linux server and the microkernel was also discussed.
