Abstract

With the explosion of Information Technology, security is becoming more important. It has been reported that there is an increase of instrusions launched by irresponsible parties. One of the mechanisms used to ensure security in a network is Intrusion Detection System (IDS). There are few available techniques found in IDS and this project is developed to study the capability and robustness of two statistical techniques namely Chi-square and Canberra Distance in detecting an intrusion using anomaly detection technique. There are five important stages in carrying out this research. There are problem definition, data analysis, development of both Chi- Square and Canberra Distance training and testing was obtained from Department of Computer Science, University of New Mexico. The testing includes several combination of normal and intrusive data. The result shows, that Chi-square is more robust in detecting an intrusion as compared to Canberra Distance.
